2205 Duplex vs 316L: When the Switch Pays Off

2205 duplex has roughly double the yield strength of 316L and much higher chloride resistance (PREN about 34 vs 24–26 for 316L). Switch when 316L risks chloride stress corrosion cracking or when higher strength allows thinner sections — but plan for tighter welding control and lower formability.

Where 2205 wins

desalination, chemical tanks, marine structures, high-chloride process lines, pressure equipment where weight matters.

Where 316L remains the right choice

moderate chloride, small welded parts, complex forming, budget-limited projects.

Fabrication notes

use matching filler, control interpass temperature, avoid excessive heat input, consider post-weld cleaning.

FAQ

Is 2205 always better than 316L?
No. It costs more and is harder to fabricate; it is justified by chloride SCC risk or strength-driven weight savings.
Can 2205 be welded like 304/316L?
No. Heat input, interpass temperature and filler selection must follow duplex welding procedures.
What is PREN?
Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number, a formula based on Cr, Mo and N that ranks chloride pitting resistance.
